Affordable Maintenance Tips for Your Can-Am Spyder or Ryker

Affordable Maintenance Tips for Your Can-Am Spyder or Ryker

I'm sure you didn’t get into riding just to sit in the garage trying to decode error codes or overpaying someone else to lube a chain (or in this case, not lube a chain—more on that later). Keeping your Can-Am Spyder or Ryker in top shape doesn’t have to mean emptying your wallet at the dealership. In fact, with a little bit of elbow grease, some smart purchases, and a few hours on a Saturday, you can handle a good chunk of the routine maintenance yourself—and still have time for a ride.

I’ve been riding my 2021 Can-Am Spyder RT for about three years now, and after 16 years on two wheels (cruisers and ADV bikes), the transition to three wheels wasn’t just about confidence—it was about keeping my knees in the wind without needing a chiropractor every time I parked it. I may have traded lean angles for stability, but I didn’t trade in my do-it-yourself streak. Let’s talk about how to keep your Spyder or Ryker running smoothly without breaking the bank.

Start with the Basics: Oil and Filter Changes

Keeping Your Rotax Happy

Your Spyder or Ryker runs on a Rotax engine—these are tough, dependable engines that will treat you right if you return the favor. One of the most affordable and high-impact maintenance tasks you can tackle yourself is an oil change.

Use the XPS Full Synthetic Oil Change Kit (available on Amazon and directly from Can-Am). It includes oil, the right filter, o-rings, and crush washers. No guessing, no mismatched parts. If you’re trying to save even more, you can piece it together yourself, but the kit takes the brain work out of it.

Recommended: Change your oil every 4,500 to 5,000 miles, or at least once a season if you ride less. Grab a 6mm Allen socket, a filter wrench, a drain pan, and a cold drink—you’ll be done in under an hour once you get the hang of it.

Check Your Belt Tension and Rear Wheel Alignment

The No-Chain Gang Has Its Own Quirks

One of the great things about the Can-Am is the belt drive—no chain to lube or adjust constantly. But you do need to check belt tension and rear wheel alignment occasionally, especially after hitting potholes (shoutout to Ohio backroads for making that a routine thing).

Use the Gates Sonic Tension Meter or BRP’s own tension tool to make this a quick and accurate process. Belt tension affects not only longevity but also that weird “whining” sound some riders complain about. Too tight or too loose, and you’re wearing out components faster than necessary.

Bold tip: If you're hearing a high-pitched whine at cruising speeds, it's probably belt alignment—get that checked before blaming your helmet.

DIY Brake Pad Replacement

Squeaky Brakes Aren’t Just Annoying—They’re Costly

Your Can-Am is a little heavier than your average two-wheeler, which means brakes wear out faster, especially on twisty terrain or during two-up riding.

EBC makes some great aftermarket brake pads that are often better than OEM for less money. You can find full sets on RevZilla or Amazon. If you're comfortable with basic wrenching, replacing pads yourself can save you $200–$300 in labor.

Tools you’ll need: torque wrench, Allen wrenches, brake cleaner, and a calm playlist (trust me, it helps when those caliper bolts don’t want to budge).

Stick to the Right Tires—and Don’t Wait Too Long

Yes, Your Front Tires Wear Faster Than You Think

This one took me by surprise when I first got my Spyder. After decades on motorcycles where the rear tire does all the work (and all the wearing), I assumed the same would be true here. Nope. Your front tires will likely wear out faster, and unevenly if you're not checking pressure regularly.

Michelin Defender tires are a popular upgrade from stock and offer excellent grip, longevity, and comfort for the price. They're also available at most tire retailers, including Discount Tire and Tire Rack, often with rebates.

Check pressure monthly, especially when temps fluctuate. Stick to the PSI listed in your owner's manual, not what’s printed on the sidewall. Incorrect tire pressure affects everything from handling to fuel economy.

Keep the Cooling System in Check

Your Radiator Is Working Hard—Help It Out

Whether you're stuck in traffic on a 90-degree day or cruising at 65 mph, your Spyder’s cooling system is keeping things from going nuclear under the hood. Don’t ignore it.

Check your coolant level regularly, especially before long trips. The XPS Extended Life Pre-Mixed Coolant is what BRP recommends, and it’s available online or at your local powersports dealer.

Inspect radiator fins for debris, bugs, or damage. A quick pass with compressed air or a gentle rinse with a garden hose will do the trick. Bonus: fewer bugs in your garage.

Affordable Accessories That Also Extend Maintenance Intervals

Sometimes a Gadget Really Is Worth It

Here are a few budget-friendly accessories I’ve found helpful for keeping maintenance costs and headaches down:

  • Battery Tender Jr. – Keeps your battery charged during off-season months or between long rides.

  • Magnetic Oil Drain Plug – Helps catch tiny metal shavings that might otherwise circulate through your engine.

  • BRP Service Manual – Not cheap upfront, but invaluable if you plan to do more than oil changes. Worth its weight in torque specs.

These little things extend life expectancy of key systems, which means fewer major repairs.

You're Not Alone in This

When I got my Spyder, I spent more time than I’d like to admit watching YouTube videos from guys in flannel shirts holding torque wrenches with names like “GrampsGarage.” But guess what? I learned a lot.

The SpyderLovers and RykerRyders forums are excellent resources. These riders have likely already asked (and answered) the exact question you have—plus, they’re generous with their knowledge. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even the “dumb” ones. We’ve all been there.

Why It’s Worth It

Let’s be honest, I ride because it keeps me sane. It’s my way of escaping the to-do lists and just being present. But when your ride starts acting up or you can’t afford that next service interval, that peace of mind disappears fast.

By taking on some of this affordable maintenance yourself, you're not just saving money—you’re connecting with your machine. You’re building confidence. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll find yourself wanting to spend a little time in the garage on a Saturday morning—tools in one hand, coffee in the other.

Even better? You'll have more time, money, and confidence to do what this whole thing’s really about: riding.
