Cascades & Coast: The Ultimate Fall Riding Guide for the Pacific Northwest

The Pacific Northwest in autumn is a spectacle of epic proportions. It's a place where the mountains meet the sea, creating a dynamic and diverse landscape that is truly a rider's dream. The summer crowds have thinned, the air is crisp, and the scenery transforms into a breathtaking palette of golds, reds, and evergreens. I’ve always been drawn to the kind of scenery that makes you feel small in the best way possible, a feeling I first got riding dirt bikes as a kid and that I’ve since chased on my cruiser, adventure bike, and now my three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder. There’s a certain magic to the way the winding roads here, whether hugging a cliffside or carving through a dense forest, demand your full attention while simultaneously offering up views that make you want to stop and stare. This guide will take you through some of the best fall routes the Pacific Northwest has to offer, from the majestic Cascade Mountains to the dramatic Oregon Coast. So, put on that extra layer of gear, and let's go discover some of the most unforgettable rides this corner of the country has to offer.

The Cascade Loop: Washington's Crown Jewel

For many riders, the Cascade Loop is the ultimate test and reward. This 440-mile journey through Washington State is a masterclass in diverse landscapes, taking you from the Puget Sound coastline, over mountain passes, and into the sun-drenched high desert. In the fall, the colors of the western slopes are magnificent, while the eastern side's clear skies offer crisp, cool air. The route is a combination of several major roads, including Washington State Route 20 (the North Cascades Highway) and US Route 2. The passes can get chilly, so this is where that technical layering comes in handy. You’ll navigate everything from long, sweeping curves to tight switchbacks, all while surrounded by snow-capped peaks and vibrant autumn forests.

Western Charm & Alpine Delights

As you cross the mountains, you'll find yourself in the charming, Old West-themed town of Winthrop. This is a perfect place to stretch your legs and feel like you've ridden into a movie set. The boardwalks and historic buildings are a treat. Old Schoolhouse Brewery is a fantastic spot to grab a hearty meal and a local brew, with a patio right on the Methow River. If you’re planning to stay the night, the rustic elegance of the Methow River Lodge and Cabins offers a serene riverside retreat. For a more upscale experience, Sun Mountain Lodge, perched on a mountain with panoramic views, is a great option.

Further along the route, you'll encounter the famously Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth. It's kitschy, yes, but in the best possible way. The town is an ode to all things German, and it's a blast to see. JJ Hills Restaurant & Bar is a must-visit, offering a perfect blend of Pacific Northwest ingredients with German-inspired dishes. When it comes to lodging, the Leavenworth Village Inn puts you right in the heart of the action.

The Oregon Coast Highway: A Scenic Symphony

There's nothing quite like the Oregon Coast in the fall. The summer fog gives way to clear, brilliant days, and the powerful Pacific Ocean creates a dramatic backdrop for an unforgettable ride. The main route is the legendary US Route 101, and while it's not a technical road with endless switchbacks, the scenery is so distracting you’ll be grateful for the gentle, flowing curves. My husband and I are used to day-tripping, but this route is a strong argument for a multi-day journey. You'll pass through quaint fishing villages, state parks, and coastal forests, with countless turnoffs for picture-perfect views.

Seaside Treats & Coastal Comforts

Your journey might begin near Astoria and head south. Your first major stop should be Cannon Beach, home to the iconic Haystack Rock. A walk on the beach here is a requirement. For a fantastic meal with a view, consider the Driftwood Restaurant, a local favorite known for its fresh seafood. When you're ready to call it a day, the Hallmark Resort & Spa offers comfortable, oceanfront lodging with the sound of the waves to lull you to sleep.

Continuing south, you’ll pass through the famous Three Capes Scenic Loop and eventually make your way to Depoe Bay, known as the "whale watching capital of the Oregon Coast." This small town is built around the "world’s smallest navigable harbor" and is a great place to watch for migrating gray whales. For an incredible fine dining experience, Restaurant Beck is a highly-acclaimed spot that focuses on foraged and locally-sourced ingredients. For a place to rest, the cliffside rooms at the Channel House provide a truly memorable stay with spectacular views. And you absolutely cannot pass through the area without a stop at the Tillamook Creamery for some of their world-famous cheese and ice cream.

Olympic Peninsula Loop: Forest to Sea

For a ride that truly captures the wild, untamed spirit of the Pacific Northwest, the Olympic Peninsula Loop is second to none. This expansive loop on US Route 101 wraps around Olympic National Park, taking you from temperate rainforests to dramatic coastal cliffs and deep blue inland waterways. The roads are a mix of smooth highway and winding, forested sections. This route is a testament to the region’s diverse ecosystems, and the fall colors are spectacular in the lowlands before you reach the evergreen-dominated coastline. Just be aware that this is a remote area, so gas up when you have the chance.

Port Angeles Provisions

The city of Port Angeles serves as a great basecamp for exploring the northern part of the peninsula. It’s the gateway to Hurricane Ridge and a vibrant waterfront town. For a relaxed, local meal, Barhop Brewing & Taproom offers delicious wood-fired pizza and a great selection of craft beer. For lodging, the Olympic Lodge by Ayres provides a comfortable and well-appointed place to stay, with amenities that feel well-earned after a long day in the saddle.

Mount Hood Scenic Byway: A Volcanic Vistas

While technically part of the Cascades, the Mount Hood Scenic Byway in Oregon deserves its own mention. This route, a combination of Oregon Routes 35 and 26, circles the base of the majestic Mount Hood. The scenery is a stunning blend of dense national forest, apple and pear orchards, and jaw-dropping views of the mountain itself. The roads are well-maintained, with plenty of gentle curves that make for a relaxing and beautiful ride. The fall colors here, especially in the orchards of the Hood River Valley, are breathtaking.

Hood River Haven

Your journey on this byway will likely bring you through the town of Hood River, which has a fantastic small-town vibe mixed with a serious outdoor sports culture. For a great meal with an incredible view, Three Rivers Grill offers upscale dining overlooking the Columbia River. When you’re ready to stop for the night, the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn is a reliable choice right on the river, offering a peaceful and beautiful place to rest.

Riding in the Pacific Northwest during the fall is an experience that puts you in the moment. The combination of epic scenery, challenging roads, and welcoming small towns makes for a trip that stays with you long after you’ve put the kickstand down. It’s a chance to truly appreciate the gifts of this amazing world, one turn at a time. So go on, get your knees in the wind and discover the magic of the Cascades and the Coast.
