Chasing Waterfalls: North Carolina Motorcycle Touring

Chasing Waterfalls: North Carolina Motorcycle Touring

There is a specific kind of mental clutter that accumulates when you’ve spent years balancing the logistics of a full-time career, six years of college, and the beautiful, rowdy chaos of raising triplet boys largely on your own. For a long time, my "off" switch was the rhythmic hum of an engine. I started riding at 35, and while I’ve transitioned through cruisers and adventure bikes to my current 21 Can-Am Spyder RT, the goal has always been the same: finding a moment to be truly present. When my husband—a 40-year veteran of two wheels—and I head south from our home in Southeast Ohio, we aren’t just looking for miles; we’re looking for that "reset" button that only a mountain breeze and the roar of a hidden cascade can provide. North Carolina’s "Land of Waterfalls" is exactly where that happens. It’s a place where the geography is as technical as a software patch but far more rewarding to navigate.

The Heavy Hitters: Popular Waterfall Routes

If you’re heading to Western North Carolina, you’re likely aiming for the big names, and for good reason. These roads are the "Greatest Hits" of the Blue Ridge for a reason—they offer a supportive network of curves and views that even a seasoned rider can appreciate.

The Waterfall Byway (US-64)

Connecting Franklin to Highlands, US-64 is the undisputed king of roadside cascades. This stretch of road is a technical masterpiece, rising 2,000 feet through the Cullasaja Gorge. The pavement is generally smooth, but the curves are tight and frequently shadowed by massive rock overhangs. It’s like riding through a cathedral made of granite and hemlock.

  • Cullasaja Falls: You’ll see this one right from the saddle. It’s a 250-foot drop that follows the road’s edge. There isn't much room for a group to pull over, so it’s best enjoyed as a slow-roll "drive-by."

  • Dry Falls: Don't let the name fool you. True to its quirky nature, you can actually walk behind the thundering 75-foot curtain of water. It has a paved walkway and restrooms, making it the perfect technical pit stop to stretch your legs.

  • Bridal Veil Falls: This is the only waterfall in the state you used to be able to ride your bike behind. While the "drive-under" portion is often blocked off for safety now, it remains a stunning roadside photo op that requires zero hiking.

The Forest Heritage Scenic Byway (US-276)

Running through the heart of the Pisgah National Forest, US-276 connects Brevard to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This road is a lush, green tunnel in the summer and a fiery display of color in the fall. The road follows the Davidson River, offering sweeping "S" curves that are incredibly satisfying.

  • Looking Glass Falls: This 60-foot tall beauty is perhaps the most photographed waterfall in the South. It’s located directly on the road with a large stairs-access point.

  • Sliding Rock: Just up the road, you’ll find this natural water slide. It’s a great place to stop and watch brave souls plunge into the mountain water, though I prefer to keep my gear dry and stay "in the moment" on the bike.

The Hidden Gems: Lesser-Known Routes

If the main highways are the "classic rock" of riding, these routes are the "indie tracks"—less crowded, a bit more rugged, and full of surprises. These are for the riders who don't mind a little extra "grit" in their travel.

NC-215: The High Elevation Escape

Often overshadowed by its neighbor US-276, NC-215 is a hidden treasure for those seeking solitude. It runs parallel to the Parkway and offers some of the most dramatic elevation changes in the region. The road is narrower and the curves can be "surprise hairpins," so keep your eye lead high.

  • French Broad Falls: Located near Balsam Grove, these falls (also known as Mill Shoals) are actually a twin set of cascades. It’s a quiet, peaceful spot that feels miles away from the tourist hubs of Highlands.

  • Sunburst Falls: You’ll ride right over this one. The road crosses a historic stone bridge directly above the falls. It’s a "blink and you’ll miss it" moment that perfectly captures the quirky charm of North Carolina backroads.

Wayah Road: The Nantahala Loop

For those who want to escape the "cagers" (car drivers) entirely, Wayah Road skirts the eastern side of Nantahala Lake before plunging into the Nantahala Gorge. This is a technical ride with steep descents and sharp switchbacks that will test your friction zone. The road winds through pristine wilderness and crosses narrow bridges that feel like they were built for a different century. It’s a straightforward, no-nonsense route that rewards focus and provides a true sense of Appalachian isolation.

Fuel for the Pilot: Best Local Eateries

A day of "chasing waterfalls" burns through mental and physical energy. You need a destination that understands a rider’s appetite—straightforward food with a side of mountain hospitality.

The Ugly Dog Public House in Cashiers

After navigating the Cullasaja Gorge, pull into Cashiers and head for The Ugly Dog. It’s a local staple with a casual vibe that welcomes riders in their leathers. Their burgers are solid, and the atmosphere is perfect for decompressing after a few hours of technical hairpins.

Joey’s Pancake House in Maggie Valley

If you’re starting your day in the Maggie Valley area, Joey’s is a mandatory rite of passage. It’s a massive breakfast tradition that has been fueling bikers for decades. The service is fast and friendly, exactly what you need before hitting the Soco Gap.

BearWaters Brewing Company in Maggie Valley

BearWaters is located right on the river, this is a fantastic spot for a post-ride dinner. You can sit by the water and listen to the same river you were riding alongside all day. The food is elevated pub fare that hits the spot after a long day in the wind.

Rider-Friendly Stays: Where to Park the Chrome

When the sun dips behind the Blue Ridge, you want a place that treats your bike as well as it treats you.

Meadowlark Motel in Maggie Valley

This place is a legend in the riding community for a reason. The Meadowlark Motel focuses on "Appalachian Road Culture" and sits right next door to the Wheels Through Time Museum. They offer dedicated bike rags and a BackPorch Pavilion with live music. It’s a supportive network of fellow riders that makes you feel right at home.

Main Street Inn in Highlands

If you want to stay in the heart of waterfall country, the Main Street Inn is a historic farmhouse-style inn that offers a bit more "class" without being stuffy. It’s located in a late 1800s mansion and is walking distance to all the shops and cafes in Highlands. It’s a great way to "wow" your partner on a trip without breaking the bank.

The mountains are a gift, a reminder that after the busy years of raising a family and building a career, there is still adventure waiting. Whether you're following my husband on his Yamaha Venture or carving your own path, North Carolina's waterfalls are the perfect destination to put your knees back in the wind.
