Epic Southwest Motorcycle Routes You Can't Miss!

Epic Southwest Motorcycle Routes You Can't Miss!

If you’re like me, riding is about more than just getting from point A to point B. It’s about feeling the sun on your face, the wind in your helmet, and the road stretching out in front of you like an endless invitation. There’s something deeply satisfying about cruising through wide-open spaces, especially in the breathtaking landscapes of the American Southwest. Sure, everyone’s heard of iconic rides like Route 66 and the Tail of the Dragon’s dry cousin, the Devil’s Highway. But if you’re ready to veer off the well-traveled path, I’ve got three lesser-known but equally epic routes for you to explore.

These roads offer spectacular scenery, challenging curves, and moments of pure awe that make you feel like a tiny but significant part of something much larger. Buckle up—or rather, zip your jacket—and let’s dive in.

The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway (New Mexico)

This loop through northern New Mexico is a hidden gem that winds through diverse landscapes, from alpine forests to desert vistas. Starting in Taos, a quirky town full of art, culture, and some of the best tamales you’ll ever eat, this route encircles Wheeler Peak, the state’s highest mountain.

The ride will take you through a mix of long, scenic straights and tight curves as you pass through Red River, Eagle Nest, and Angel Fire. Red River feels like a Western movie set come to life, complete with saloons and a rustic charm. Eagle Nest, perched by a crystal-clear mountain lake, offers a peaceful pit stop before the road carries you up through winding forest roads to Angel Fire. The elevation changes are no joke, with the road climbing up over 9,000 feet in places.

Riders should be prepared for cooler temperatures at higher altitudes, even in the summer. Pro tip: take a detour up to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in Angel Fire, a moving tribute that will put your ride—and life—into perspective. The combination of scenic beauty, cultural history, and challenging curves makes the Enchanted Circle an unforgettable experience.

The Apache Trail (Arizona)

Okay, I’ll admit this isn’t the kind of "trail" you want to tackle without a decent set of tires and a willingness to get a little dusty. But for adventure seekers craving a rugged, off-the-beaten-path ride, the Apache Trail delivers in spades. This historic route was originally a Native American footpath and later became a supply road for the construction of Roosevelt Dam.

Starting in Apache Junction, the road snakes its way through the Superstition Mountains, a range steeped in folklore and stories of lost gold mines. The first part of the trail is paved, with sharp turns and drop-offs that will have you double-checking your braking skills. Once you reach Canyon Lake, be prepared for jaw-dropping views of desert rock formations reflected in the water. But here’s the kicker—after Tortilla Flat (a one-time stagecoach stop turned quirky tourist spot), the pavement disappears.

The remaining gravel section is not for the faint of heart. Steep switchbacks and narrow passes will keep you on your toes, but the reward is an unrivaled view of Fish Creek Hill and the rugged wilderness beyond. Just take it slow, savor the ride, and don’t forget to snap a photo or two. It’s like riding through a John Wayne movie—minus the gunfights.

Scenic Byway 12 (Utah)

If Utah had a greatest hits album for scenic roads, Byway 12 would be track one. This 120-mile stretch runs between Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, and it’s like Mother Nature decided to show off every geological trick in her book.

You’ll kick things off near Torrey, with panoramic views of Capitol Reef’s red rock cliffs and mesas. From there, the road takes you through Boulder Mountain, which offers high-altitude forest views and a chance to cool off. Trust me, you’ll want to breathe in that fresh pine air because things are about to get wild.

The highlight of the ride is a section known as the "Hogback," a narrow ridge where the road drops off sharply on both sides into canyons below. This is not the time to let your mind wander—stay focused and keep your line steady. Beyond the Hogback, you'll glide into the town of Escalante, where you can refuel your bike and your belly before heading through Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The ever-changing scenery will have you pulling over for photos more times than you can count.

Whether you camp overnight or power through in a day, Scenic Byway 12 will leave you speechless. It’s like riding through a series of natural cathedrals, each more awe-inspiring than the last.

Why the Southwest?

There’s just something about the Southwest that speaks to the soul of a rider. Maybe it’s the contrast between vast, open deserts and towering red rock formations. Maybe it’s the way the light changes throughout the day, painting the landscape in shades of gold, pink, and deep crimson. Whatever it is, this part of the country has a way of grounding you in the present moment. And isn't that what riding is all about?

As someone who’s done my fair share of day trips and long-distance adventures, I can vouch for the fact that these roads offer something truly special. They challenge you in all the right ways—mentally, physically, and emotionally. Riding here is a reminder of the freedom we chase every time we throw a leg over our machines. It's why I fell in love with motorcycles in the first place and why I found a new joy when I switched to three wheels on my Can-Am Spyder.

So, pack your gear, check your tire pressure, and hit the road. Just don’t forget to share your stories when you get back—I want to hear all about your adventures.
