Exploring Florida: Top Motorcycle Routes & Biker Hotspots

There’s something about riding in Florida that just hits different. Maybe it’s the combination of ocean breezes, endless sunshine, and roads that seem made for cruising. Or maybe it’s the quirky mix of history, beach towns, and biker bars that make every ride feel like a mini adventure. Whether you're rolling on two wheels or three, Florida has some of the best motorcycle routes and biker-friendly stops in the country.

I’ve done my fair share of traveling, mostly by car, but ever since switching to my Can-Am Spyder, I’ve found a new love for taking in the scenery without worrying about gravity messing with my good time. My husband, a two-wheeled purist, still enjoys leaning into the curves while I sit back and enjoy the ride—especially on Florida’s smooth, scenic roads. If you’re looking for the best places to ride in the Sunshine State, this guide is for you.

The Legendary Florida Keys Ride

Few motorcycle routes in the U.S. can compete with the sheer beauty of riding through the Florida Keys. The Overseas Highway (US-1) takes you from the mainland all the way to Key West, with 113 miles of uninterrupted views of turquoise waters and salty air that sticks to your skin in the best way possible.

What to Expect:

  • Best Starting Point: Florida City, the last mainland stop before you hit the Keys.
  • Must-See Stops: Key Largo’s John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Marathon’s Seven Mile Bridge (a bucket-list ride for sure), and the Southernmost Point in Key West for the obligatory photo-op.
  • Fuel & Food: Plenty of gas stations along US-1, but prices are higher the further you go south—so fuel up early. For food, check out Alabama Jack’s in Key Largo for fresh seafood and a laid-back biker vibe, or Hog’s Breath Saloon in Key West for a cold beer and live music.
  • Lodging: If you’re making this a multi-day trip, budget-friendly options are limited, but Sugarloaf Lodge (just outside of Key West) offers a great mix of affordability and waterfront views.

The Forgotten Coast – Old Florida’s Best Kept Secret

If the Keys feel a little too crowded, Florida’s Forgotten Coast is where you go when you want the views without the tourist congestion. This stretch along the Gulf Coast between Mexico Beach and St. Marks is packed with pristine beaches, winding roads, and small towns that feel like they’ve been untouched by time.

What to Expect:

  • Best Route: Start in Apalachicola and take US-98 along the coast, stopping in places like Carrabelle and St. George Island.
  • Scenic Vibes: Expect quiet roads, plenty of wildlife, and zero chain restaurants—just family-owned diners and seafood shacks.
  • Fuel & Food: Gas stations are sparse between Carrabelle and St. Marks, so plan accordingly. For a meal, grab a bite at the Apalachicola Seafood Grill—their oysters and grouper sandwiches are legendary.
  • Lodging: If you want a break from the usual hotels, consider The Gibson Inn in Apalachicola. It’s historic, biker-friendly, and right in the heart of town.

The Ocala National Forest Loop – Twists, Turns, and Tall Pines

If you prefer riding through the woods rather than along the coast, the Ocala National Forest offers some of the best two-lane backroads in Florida. With rolling hills, freshwater springs, and roads that curve just enough to keep things interesting, it’s a perfect day trip destination.

What to Expect:

  • Best Route: Start in Silver Springs, take FL-40 west through the forest, then loop back on FL-19.
  • Best Time to Ride: Fall and winter are ideal—the summer heat in the forest can be brutal.
  • Fuel & Food: There are long stretches with no gas stations, so make sure to fill up before heading in. Stop at The Dam Diner near Moss Bluff for a hearty Southern-style breakfast or lunch.
  • Must-See Spots: Silver Springs State Park (known for its crystal-clear waters) and Juniper Springs, where you can take a dip if the Florida heat gets to you.

Daytona Beach – More Than Just Bike Week

Everyone knows Daytona for its famous Bike Week, but the riding around the area is just as good outside of rally season. Whether you want to cruise down A1A along the coast or hit some of the scenic inland roads, Daytona is a must-ride destination for any biker.

What to Expect:

  • Best Short Ride: Take a loop around the Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail. It’s about 30 miles of Spanish moss-covered roads with incredible views of the Halifax River and the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Best Biker Bars: The Boot Hill Saloon is legendary, but don’t sleep on Iron Horse Saloon for live music and cold drinks.
  • Fuel & Food: Plenty of gas stations and places to eat. The Oyster Pub in Daytona Beach is a solid pick if you love seafood.
  • Lodging: Whether you’re in town for Bike Week or just passing through, Daytona’s got every kind of lodging, from beachfront motels to biker-friendly Airbnbs.

Florida’s Best Hidden Gem: The Green Swamp Loop

If you’re looking for a ride that’s way off the beaten path, the Green Swamp Loop in Central Florida is a dream for riders who love backroads, wildlife, and wide-open spaces.

What to Expect:

  • Best Route: Take CR-471 from Sumterville, then loop through the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve.
  • Traffic: Low traffic, mostly local riders and the occasional truck hauling oranges.
  • Fuel & Food: Fuel up in Sumterville before heading into the swamp. Stop at Red Wing Restaurant in Groveland for some of the best fried catfish in Florida.
  • What Makes It Special: The roads are peaceful, the scenery is classic Florida wilderness, and you’ll see more gators and deer than tourists.

Florida Riding Tips

  • Weather Considerations: Florida can go from sunshine to monsoon in five minutes. Pack rain gear, especially in the summer.
  • Road Conditions: Most routes are well-maintained, but some rural roads can have surprise potholes or sandy patches. Keep an eye out.
  • Wildlife Watch: Especially in the Ocala National Forest and the Green Swamp, deer and wild hogs have a habit of crossing roads at the worst times. Be alert.
  • Best Time to Ride: October through April is prime riding season. Summers can be brutally hot, and the afternoon thunderstorms are no joke.
