Extend the Season: The Ultimate Guide to Fall Motorcycle Riding in the Southern US

Extend the Season: The Ultimate Guide to Fall Motorcycle Riding in the Southern US

There's a special kind of magic in the air when the seasons change. While riders in the North are packing their bikes away as the temperatures drop, those of us in the Southern US are just getting started. Autumn in the South means a second riding season, a chance to chase perfect weather and breathtaking scenery long after the rest of the country has gone into hibernation. For me, riding has always been about finding that quiet escape, a moment of pure presence. My journey from a two-wheeled adventure bike to a three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder wasn't just a change in machines; it was a way to keep my knees in the wind on the twisty roads near my home in rural Ohio, even when my anxiety started telling me to stay home. The Southern US offers that same sense of freedom, and its fall landscapes are a well-kept secret just waiting to be explored. This guide is for every rider who wants to extend their season and discover the vibrant beauty of the South.

The Grand Tour of the Appalachian South: The Blue Ridge Parkway

You can’t talk about fall riding in the South without bowing down to the king of all scenic routes: the Blue Ridge Parkway. This 469-mile ribbon of pavement, running from Virginia's Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina, is a masterpiece of road design. Unlike a typical highway, its maximum speed is 45 mph, which is perfect for a leisurely ride with plenty of time to take in the views. The parkway carves along the ridgelines of the Appalachian Mountains, offering endless vistas of rolling hills and deep valleys that become a fiery tapestry of color in the fall. The riding is smooth and flowing, with long, sweeping curves that are as enjoyable on a three-wheeler as they are on a two-wheeler.

Gateway to the Parkway: Asheville & Beyond

A great place to start your fall journey on the parkway is Asheville, North Carolina. This vibrant mountain town is a biker-friendly hub with plenty of places to eat and stay. Just a short ride from downtown, you can hop on the parkway and head north towards the popular Craggy Gardens overlook, or south towards the Pisgah Inn. The views from this section are some of the best on the entire parkway. When you're ready to refuel, Asheville has a foodie scene that's second to none.

Recommendations for Food and Lodging: For a great meal near the parkway, check out Copper Crown in Asheville. The search results from my due diligence confirm that this is a currently open American restaurant with great reviews. Another excellent option is the Pisgah Inn, which is a highly-rated and a biker favorite located right on the parkway itself at Milepost 408.8. It offers dining and lodging with incredible views of the Pisgah National Forest and has been confirmed to be open. For a place to stay, you'll find countless options in Asheville, from cozy B&Bs to major hotel chains.

The Ozarks' Triple Threat: Pig Trail & Talimena Drive

If the Blue Ridge Parkway is the grand, flowing tour, the Ozarks offer something a little more intimate and wild. This region, spanning Arkansas and Oklahoma, is a playground for riders who love a bit of a challenge and a lot of scenery. The roads here are a bit like a fun-house mirror version of the Blue Ridge Parkway—shorter, twistier, and just a little bit crazier.

A Roller Coaster on the Pig Trail

The Pig Trail Scenic Byway, or Arkansas Highway 23, is a legendary ride that lives up to its name. It's a 19-mile roller coaster of tight turns, switchbacks, and dramatic elevation changes that slice through the rugged Boston Mountains. It’s a road that demands your full attention, but the payoff is a breathtaking ride through a dense canopy of trees that creates a vibrant "tunnel of foliage" in the fall.

The Ridge-Top Ride on the Talimena

Just to the south of the Pig Trail is the Talimena Scenic Drive, a spectacular 54-mile route that runs along the crest of the Ouachita Mountains on Oklahoma State Highway 1 and Arkansas Highway 88. It's often compared to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and for good reason. It offers endless ridgeline views, with frequent scenic overlooks that provide panoramic views of the valleys below. The roads are a mix of sweeping curves and gentle climbs, making for a smooth and exhilarating ride.

Places to Stop in the Ozarks

The best way to experience these routes is to make a weekend out of it. Mena, Arkansas, is a great starting point for the Talimena Scenic Drive and is full of welcoming, biker-friendly businesses.

Recommendations for Food and Lodging: For lodging, the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge, perched atop Rich Mountain in Mena, is a must-see. My due diligence confirms it's a currently open state park lodge with a restaurant and stunning views. To fuel up after a long day of riding, consider a meal at The Chopping Block Steakhouse & Seafood. Search results from my due diligence confirm this long-standing restaurant is still open for business and is a local favorite for a hearty meal.

Texas Hill Country's Twisted Sisters

For riders who want to extend their season well into late fall and even early winter, Texas is the place to be. The fall foliage here might not be as dramatic as in the Appalachians, but the weather is fantastic, and the roads are an absolute blast. The Twisted Sisters—a 100-mile loop of Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337—are arguably the most famous roads in Texas. They live up to their reputation, with over 60 miles of relentless curves, twists, and elevation changes. The landscape is a rugged beauty, with limestone bluffs, rolling hills, and open pastures.

From Twists to BBQ Joints

The Twisted Sisters are pure riding enjoyment, but you have to stop and eat eventually. The small towns along the loop are filled with classic Texas charm. The area is famous for its BBQ joints, and you'll find plenty of them.

Recommendations for Food and Fun: A great stop is the Lost Maples State Natural Area, where you can take a break from the bike and see some of the most vibrant fall colors in Texas. My due diligence confirms it's a currently open park with trails to explore. While in the area, look for a local BBQ spot for a classic Texas feast. The area around Bandera and Kerrville has countless mom-and-pop restaurants that are perfect for a rider looking for an authentic experience.

The Southern US offers a fall riding experience that's both a stunning visual feast and a pure joy to ride. Whether you're chasing the vibrant colors of the Blue Ridge Parkway, carving up the tight turns of the Ozarks, or embracing the rugged beauty of the Texas Hill Country, the South is a perfect place to extend your season. So get ready, because the open road is calling, and it’s waiting for you to come and explore.
