New England & Blue Ridge: The Ultimate Fall Riding Guide for the Eastern US

New England & Blue Ridge: The Ultimate Fall Riding Guide for the Eastern US

There’s something magical about the crisp air and vibrant colors of fall. For many of us, it’s a siren song, calling us to hit the open road and experience the season’s spectacle from the saddle of our bikes. I remember my first few years of riding, a newfound stress valve after a long day of work, college classes, and trying to keep up with three teenage boys. You know, that moment when you realize you're a human being and not just a glorified Uber driver. It’s a feeling that never gets old. While my riding style has evolved over the years—from a traditional cruiser to an adventure bike, and now, my beloved three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder—the thrill of the ride remains the same. Whether you ride two wheels or three, there’s no better time to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Eastern US than in the autumn. I’ve traveled with my husband, a seasoned two-wheeler, all over the country by car, but nothing compares to the immersion of a motorcycle ride. We're primarily day-trippers, but we’re starting to explore longer distances, and these two regions are at the top of our list.

New England: The Quintessential Autumn Experience 🍁

When you think of fall foliage in the US, chances are New England is the first place that comes to mind. And for good reason! The region is a patchwork of flaming reds, brilliant oranges, and sunny yellows. Riding here is like being inside a watercolor painting, with every turn revealing a new, stunning canvas. It’s the kind of ride that makes you feel truly present, a feeling I’ve come to cherish more and more as I’ve gotten older.

The Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire: The "Kanc" 🏞️

This isn't just a road; it’s an experience. The Kancamagus Highway (NH Route 112) is a 34.5-mile scenic byway that cuts through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest. There are no gas stations, restaurants, or hotels on the highway itself, just you and nature, which is a glorious change of pace. I remember one time, my boys, in their typical teenage fashion, complaining about "having nothing to do" on a family trip. If only they’d seen this road then, they’d understand that sometimes, doing nothing but riding and looking at scenery is the best thing you can do. The road itself is a series of sweeping curves and gentle climbs, making it a fantastic ride for all skill levels.

The road starts in Conway and ends in Lincoln. The best time to ride the Kancamagus is during the first two weeks of October, when the colors are at their peak. You'll want to get an early start to avoid the crowds, as this is a popular spot for a reason. While on the Kanc, you absolutely have to stop at the Hancock Overlook for a panoramic view of the mountains. It's the kind of view that sticks with you. For a great post-ride meal, head to the Black Cap Grille in North Conway. They have a fantastic menu and a cozy atmosphere that's perfect for unwinding. If you’re looking for a place to stay, the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods is a splurge, but the history and views are unbeatable.

Route 100, Vermont: The "Green Mountain Ride" 🍏

Vermont's Route 100 is often called the "ski highway" because it links many of the state's ski resorts. But in the fall, it transforms into a stunning ribbon of road that winds through rolling hills, classic New England villages, and vibrant forests. The route is over 200 miles long, so you could easily spend a whole day or a weekend exploring it. It’s a bit like life—you can’t rush through it and expect to appreciate all the details. We used to drive this route in a car, and while it was beautiful, it's a completely different experience on a bike.

The northern section of Route 100, between Waterbury and Stowe, is particularly popular. The curves are tight but manageable, and the scenery is just unreal. Make a point to stop at the Ben & Jerry's Factory in Waterbury for a tour and a scoop of your favorite ice cream. It’s a great little quirky stop. For lunch, try The Prohibition Pig in Waterbury for some seriously good BBQ and local brews. If you’re looking for a charming place to stay, The Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe offers breathtaking views and a unique history.

Blue Ridge Parkway: The Southern Charm of Fall 🍁

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a bucket-list ride for any motorcyclist. Spanning 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina, it’s often referred to as "America's Favorite Drive." The parkway isn't just about the distance; it’s about the journey. The speed limit is a leisurely 45 mph, which forces you to slow down and truly absorb the scenery. It's a welcome change of pace from the anxiety of navigating twisty, hilly roads, which is what I face in my rural Ohio home. Riding the parkway in my Can-Am Spyder is the perfect way to take in the views without the constant worry of a sharp turn or a steep grade.

Virginia's Blue Ridge Parkway: The Northern Section ⛰️

The northern part of the parkway in Virginia offers some of the most dramatic mountain views. As you ride, you'll be treated to overlooks that seem to stretch on forever, and the forests below will be a symphony of fall colors. The road is well-maintained, with long, sweeping curves that are a joy to ride. The elevation changes are significant, so be prepared for a change in temperature as you climb higher.

Make a detour to Natural Bridge State Park for a breathtaking view of the natural limestone arch. It's an incredible sight. For a delicious meal, you'll want to stop in Roanoke and check out The River and Rail. Their southern-inspired menu is out of this world. Consider spending a night at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, a historic hotel with a lot of character and charm.

North Carolina's Blue Ridge Parkway: The Southern Section 🌄

The North Carolina section of the parkway is equally beautiful, with some of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Mountains. This part of the road is known for its tunnels and more technical twists and turns. It's an absolute blast to ride. The colors here tend to peak a bit later than in the north, usually around mid-October to early November, so it's a great option if you miss the New England peak.

A can’t-miss stop is the Linn Cove Viaduct, a stunning architectural marvel that hugs the side of Grandfather Mountain. It's an engineering feat and a beautiful piece of road. For a great meal, head into Asheville and grab a bite at Tupelo Honey. They serve classic Southern food with a modern twist. For a unique and luxurious stay, The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville is an iconic destination with stunning mountain views.

The Ultimate Fall Riding Experience

Whether you choose the classic charm of New England or the majestic beauty of the Blue Ridge, you're in for an unforgettable fall ride. As a mom who has spent a lifetime juggling a career and three growing boys, riding has always been my escape, my moment of peace. It allows me to be in the moment and truly appreciate the incredible world around me. My husband, a two-wheel aficionado for over 40 years, still gets the same thrill from a great ride. We've found that these scenic routes are the perfect way to connect with the road, with nature, and with each other. So, gear up, hit the road, and let the autumn colors be your guide.
