For motorcycle riders who crave the open road but are looking to break away from the usual highways and crowded tourist spots, the Midwest offers some of the most underrated scenic routes in the country. While many think of endless cornfields and flat lands when they hear "Midwest," seasoned riders know there's much more to discover—breathtaking landscapes, rolling hills, hidden lakes, and winding backroads that will keep you engaged from start to finish. Having spent years riding across different terrains on both two and three wheels, I've come to appreciate those "off-the-beaten-path" gems that offer a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.
These lesser-known routes provide both scenic beauty and technical challenges to make your next ride unforgettable. Let’s dive into three such routes, with all the twists, turns, and panoramic views you didn’t know you needed.
The Great River Road (Iowa & Wisconsin Stretch)
The Great River Road follows the mighty Mississippi River, but if you think it’s all flat and repetitive, think again. One of the lesser-traveled sections between McGregor, Iowa, and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, offers stunning views, historical landmarks, and peaceful backroads that are perfect for motorcycle day trips.
Starting in McGregor, you’ll ride along Highway 76 and the surrounding byways. Right off the bat, you'll notice towering limestone bluffs rising on one side and expansive river views on the other. The road winds enough to keep things interesting but isn't so extreme that you're white-knuckling your handlebars. If you're like me, you'd rather enjoy the ride than constantly worry about taking a turn too fast on an unfamiliar road.
Make a quick stop at Pikes Peak State Park (no, not that Pikes Peak) for some spectacular overlook views of the Mississippi River and surrounding valleys. From there, cross the bridge into Wisconsin and follow Highway 35, also known as the "Great River Road Scenic Byway." You’ll pass through quaint river towns like Lynxville and Ferryville, where time seems to stand still. The road has a perfect rhythm of curves and straight sections, letting you settle into a steady, peaceful ride.
This route is especially magical in the fall when the changing colors of the trees reflect off the river. Just don’t get too distracted by the views—there are still plenty of deer to dodge along the way.
The Hocking Hills Scenic Byway (Ohio)
As someone who now calls Southeast Ohio home, I can tell you firsthand that the Hocking Hills region is a hidden paradise for motorcycle riders. When I first started riding here, I’ll admit the steep grades and sharp turns of these hilly roads gave me some pause. But after upgrading to my Can-Am Spyder, I’ve been able to fully embrace this area's unique beauty without the same anxiety.
This route begins near the small town of Logan, Ohio, and winds through some of the most breathtaking natural scenery in the state. The 26-mile Hocking Hills Scenic Byway follows State Route 374 and passes key landmarks like Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave. Think towering rock formations, dense forests, and deep gorges around every bend—yeah, not your average Midwest landscape.
The road itself is well-maintained but definitely keeps you on your toes. You'll encounter plenty of tight curves, elevation changes, and scenic pull-offs perfect for photo ops. Take your time and enjoy the area's many hiking trails and roadside attractions if you’re up for a break. I usually make a stop at the Hocking Hills Winery for a relaxing post-ride drink—just make sure to wait until you're off the bike!
With a mix of slow technical turns and faster straightaways, this route is ideal for both beginner and seasoned riders looking for variety. If you're traveling from out of state, you can easily spend a weekend here exploring all the winding backroads that connect to the main route.
The Flint Hills Scenic Byway (Kansas)
I know what you’re thinking: Kansas? Scenic? Believe me, I was skeptical too—until I rode through the Flint Hills. This often-overlooked area is proof that not all of Kansas is pancake-flat. Stretching for 47 miles along K-177 between Council Grove and Cassoday, the Flint Hills Scenic Byway takes you through one of the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in North America.
Riding through the Flint Hills is a bit like stepping back in time. Rolling hills stretch as far as the eye can see, dotted with wildflowers and grazing cattle. There's a peaceful solitude out here that makes you feel like you’re in your own world—just you, the road, and the occasional wind gust to keep you grounded.
Start your ride in the historic town of Council Grove, known for its role as a key stop along the Santa Fe Trail. As you head south, the landscape opens up in dramatic fashion. The road gently undulates with long, sweeping curves that let you relax and soak in the scenery. It's not a technical ride, but the sheer beauty of the wide-open prairie under a vast sky is a different kind of thrill.
Stop at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve along the way to stretch your legs and learn about the region's unique ecosystem. By the time you reach Cassoday, known as the "Prairie Chicken Capital of the World" (yes, that’s a thing), you’ll have a newfound appreciation for the natural beauty hidden within America’s heartland.
Why These Routes Deserve a Spot on Your Bucket List
What sets these routes apart is the balance of scenic beauty and the sense of discovery. Unlike more famous routes like the Blue Ridge Parkway or Route 66, these Midwest gems offer a quieter, more intimate riding experience. You’re not battling heavy traffic or dodging endless streams of RVs—you’re free to ride at your own pace and take in the sights.
Whether you're a seasoned two-wheeler or a three-wheel convert like me, these scenic routes have something for everyone. They offer the perfect opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy some solitude, and remind yourself why you fell in love with riding in the first place.
If you’re looking to mix things up, give one of these routes a try. Who knows—you might just discover your new favorite ride.
