Tips for planning a multi-day motorcycle or Can-Am road trip

Few things in life compare to the thrill of hitting the open road on a motorcycle or Can-Am Spyder. It’s a journey of freedom, exploration, and pure joy. But planning a multi-day road trip on two or three wheels isn’t just about picking a destination and revving up the engine. It takes careful planning to ensure the ride is as smooth and enjoyable as possible. With some thoughtful preparation and a touch of personal experience, here are some tips to make your next road trip a memorable one.

Choosing the Right Destination and Route

When it comes to road trips, the journey truly matters just as much as the destination. Whether you're cruising down the Blue Ridge Parkway, exploring the rolling hills of Kentucky, or tackling the twisty roads of Southeast Ohio, your route should be planned with care. Consider scenic byways, rest stops, and areas with low traffic.

Pro Tip: Download a reliable navigation app like REVER or Scenic, which are great for motorcyclists and Can-Am riders. They can help you map out routes that avoid highways and prioritize the best riding roads. Plus, they often highlight points of interest, gas stations, and rest areas.

For me, the hills of Ohio were a challenge at first, but with the stability of my Can-Am Spyder, I’ve grown to love the curves and climbs. If you’re switching from two wheels to three, plan routes that let you practice handling your ride without feeling rushed.

Packing Smart: Less is More

Packing for a road trip on a bike is a lesson in minimalism. Space is limited, so prioritize what you truly need. Start with safety essentials like a first-aid kit, a tire repair kit, and an emergency toolset. Next, pack weather-appropriate gear, including a rain suit and layered clothing. For longer trips, a compact camping towel and quick-dry travel clothes can save space and hassle.

Pro Tip: Use roll-top dry bags to keep your belongings safe from unexpected rain. For those riding a Can-Am Spyder RT like mine, take full advantage of that ample storage space—but don’t overpack just because you can.

Staying Comfortable During Long Rides

Comfort is key when you're spending hours on the road. An ergonomic seat cushion or gel pad can make a world of difference for your back and tailbone. Don’t forget to take breaks every hour or so to stretch, hydrate, and give your hands a rest from gripping the handlebars.

Invest in high-quality riding gear that fits well. If you’re riding through varying climates, consider a modular helmet and a jacket with ventilation zippers. For Can-Am riders, a windshield adjustment can help reduce fatigue from wind resistance.

My husband often teases me about my obsession with comfortable riding gloves, but after years of trial and error, I’ve learned the value of gear that fits just right. It’s like finding the perfect pair of jeans—you don’t want to settle for less.

Planning Your Stops: Fuel, Food, and Fun

Unlike car road trips, you can’t just coast for hundreds of miles without a care. Fuel stops are non-negotiable, so plan your route with gas stations in mind. Apps like Fuelio can help you locate nearby stations and track your fuel expenses.

When it comes to food, pack a mix of non-perishable snacks and look for unique local diners or roadside restaurants. Sampling the regional cuisine adds an extra layer of adventure to your trip. One of my favorites is grabbing a hearty breakfast at a local café before hitting the road—nothing beats the smell of bacon and coffee when you’re about to embark on a long ride.

Weather: Prepare for the Unexpected

Weather can make or break a road trip, so always check the forecast before you set out. But even with the best planning, Mother Nature can be unpredictable. Keep rain gear within easy reach, and consider layering your clothes to adapt to temperature changes. For Can-Am Spyder riders, the additional stability makes wet roads less intimidating, but staying dry and warm is still a top priority.

A trick I’ve learned? Carrying a lightweight balaclava can make a huge difference on chilly mornings or during unexpected temperature drops.

Riding as a Group: Communication and Safety

If you’re traveling with a group, invest in a good Bluetooth communication system to stay connected. Clear communication helps coordinate stops, navigate turns, and ensure everyone’s safety. Designate a leader and a sweep rider to keep things organized.

Riding with my husband is a joy, but we’ve had our fair share of “creative disagreements” on routes. A good comm system helps us hash out decisions mid-ride instead of at the next gas station.
